Habitat Restoration

Kelp forests are responsible for billions of dollars in ecosystem service provisions worldwide, including habitat for commercially important fish species, shoreline protection, and sources of primary production.  In some regions of California, the loss of kelp forests has been rapid and extensive, particularly in the wake of a marine heatwave from 2014-2016, causing devastating ecological and economic consequences. The drivers of kelp loss are numerous and interactions between them are likely complex. We do research that informs kelp restoration and work with managers, policy makers, NGOs and community groups to provde actionable science.
